We Want to Lose to Win!

As friends for the past 8 or so years, we have the common goal of losing weight and becoming more fit. We are joining this contest as motivation. If we have to blog, take pictures, and show proven evidence, then we might as well get ourselves to the gym! With exciting trips coming up for both of us (Denise to Jamaica for her honeymoon and Jenny to NYC for a vacation), we’d like to be able to show off our new bodies and new attitudes. We have both been working out the last couple of months and have been a great support system for the other. We attend cardio classes together, trade recipe secrets, and encourage each other to do our best. We believe that we should win because we are dedicated to improving our overall health. It’s not just about losing weight…it’s a total body and soul makeover!

My motivation

My motivation to lose weight is my Dad. Last August, he had a massive heart attack and had to have an emergency quadruple bypass. My dad’s not a very big man…in fact, he weighs less than me as well as most women (how sad is that!). But he does have diabetes and he didn’t eat the healthiest. Out of my brother and sister, I seem to be the one who inherits everything from my dad. I have his eyes, his nose, his sense of humor, and so much more. So it only seems sensible that someday I’ll inherit the diabetes and heart problems. But I plan on warding those problems off as long as possible. I want to lose weight, but more importantly, I want to be healthy! Everytime I feel like giving up, or driving through McDonald’s because it’s so much faster/easier than going home and making dinner, I think about my Dad. I’m grateful that he’s here to hug and I want to be around to hug him for a long, long time!

Spinning Class

So I braved the world of spinning class last night.  I've taken the class before but it has been awhile.  I have come to believe that anyone that takes that class has a temporary moment of insanity where they really think they are going to enjoy it!LOL!!  Anyway that has been my case!!!  The realization that I should have just stayed on the treadmill usually comes about half way through the class!!  Last night I actually had a true biggest loser moment.  I always see on the show how everyone throws up the first week or so...well I about threw up during the class last night...I really had to fight it!  Truth be told...I will most likely venture back to the class next week just because of the great cardio workout you get.  But I will be investing in a pair of padded biker shorts!!  The only thing that really got me through was my brain chanting:  "Jamacia, Jamacia, Jamacia...swimsuit, swimsuit, swimsuit!".

Until next time!

New Insight

I promise to do a better job on grammer this go around Open-mouthed ...although I do want to say that I was in extreme pain when I wrote my last blog!  I have a neck problem that flares up every now and then and when I was typing my last entry I was holding a heating pad with one hand and typing with the other.  Anyway...things have been going good...I've lost 6.5lbs since we started the blog.  I have 5 1/2 weeks before I leave for Jamaica and I am bound and determined to feel comfortable in a bathing suit!  Jenny and I have been working out together a couple times a week and talking via email almost everyday about how things are going and of course every Wednesday to discuss what happened on Biggest Loser:  Couples.  I didn't reach my goal of 2 times of cardio each day but I am trying it again this week and so far so good!  I am now able to work out over my lunch break which will help out a ton!!!  It finally dawned on me one day in the last couple of weeks that I just need to make working out a part of my daily schedule...no different than having to go to work....and of course not letting myself make excuses of why I "can't" work out.   Also - if I do miss a day of working out...it's not the end of the world...I start right back on it the next day.  My husband and I have coined a new phrase:  "I'm starting the day after today"...we both would always say we're starting or doing it "tomorrow"...well "tomorrow" never comes...and it's funny because since we have started this new saying we have both been much more diligent in working out!!!  I guess it's the little steps that add up that help to get us motivated...not trying to climb mount everest in a single attempt!!!

Anyway...until next time!

It's been awhile!

Sorry it's been a while since I last blogged. I've been pretty busy. But tonight we're getting a lot of snow in Omaha so I took a night off from the gym. Both Denise and I have been doing good with our workouts. The last couple of days have been a struggle for me. I must have done something to my knee a few days ago because I've woken up the last 2 days and it's swollen. It doesn't hurt, but it feels like it's stiff. I worked out on the elliptical last night and it did feel better. Has this ever happened to any of you? And if so, what did you do for it?

We started a weight loss competition at work last week. We weigh in every Wednesday. I did lose 1.5 lbs in 1 week...which is pretty good for me! I've avoided fast food which is my weakness. Let me tell you...after a long day at work it is so tempting to swing through the drive through some where. But now that it's been almost 2 weeks of not eating fast food, I really don't have the craving for it anymore. Yay!

Time to sign off. I promise to do better about updating. Good luck to everyone!

Zumba Class

I went Zumba class on Saturday morning having absoluely no idea what I was getting myself into.  I learned that Zumba is a dance class that incorporates different types of dance from South America...reggae, salsa, etc...  I was a little nervous as the class began but the instructor was very good about slowly demonstrating each new move.  Some of the Salsa moves I was familiar with because of Jenny and my dance adventure from Wednesday night.  Overall it was a great class...I plan on taking it again!  If anyone has a chance to take the class, I would definately do it!!!  My goal this upcoming week is to get on the treadmill 2 times a day...once in the morning (which I must say is a chore...I'm NOT a morning person Sleepy ) and then again once after work.  Jenny and I are going back to our Wednesday night dance class so we will keep you updated on how that goes!  Have a great Sunday!!!

And So Our Journey Begins

We tried a new dance class at our gym last night. I might add here that neither of us really has any rhythm so it’s quite a spectacle for everyone else in class! But we salsa’d our way through, moving and shaking our hips the entire way. Nobody told us that to dance the salsa you have to be on your toes. Wow, our calves hurt today! But it was definitely fun and a great workout. Denise will be trying a Zumba class this weekend. It’s also a dance class that combines Latin and International music. Check out this website for more information. https://www.zumba.com/index.cfm   Next stop....Dancing with the Stars! I worked out tonight on the treadmill and on the bike. I would rather run or bike outside but since it's January in Nebraska and the average temperature seems to be 10 degrees, I'll settle for the warm indoors. One of my goals is to eventually run a 5K. Let's just say that I'm not a big fan of running. But all the runners I know say that once you start, you end up loving it and getting a rush from it.....I'm still waiting for that to happen.

Enjoy the rest of your week! I'll let Denise take the next blog.
